Choose or lose

Have you ever watched little kids playing? Isn’t it funny...we don’t have to teach them to be selfish, but we do have to teach them to be selfless. I think if we’re honest with ourselves, even though we’re older not much has changed. We are naturally selfish. Most of the time, we choose the situation that is most beneficial to us and makes us happy.

We started this series 3 weeks ago talking about where we came from, last week we discussed why we are here, and now we are talking about how we make choices. The thing is, all of it builds on the one before it. Here’s how it plays out:

If you believe we are just here by accident and chance,
Then there isn’t really a purpose of life other than to be born, live, and die
And if we are just here by chance and the only point is to live life to the fullest, then there can’t be any right and wrong...only what makes us happy and not happy. You can’t tell anyone they are wrong because if it makes them happy then it’s right.

Here’s the other part:

If you believe we are here for a reason and were created by someone or something that cares about us
Then there is a purpose to life. The purpose is to fulfill what you were created for and to live in relationship with the one who created you.
Right and wrong therefore don’t come from you and I, but from the one who created the whole thing. We can then make a judgment on whether certain things are right and certain things are wrong. Like in our game tonight, these are in a sense the rules of life.

Do you wear glasses? What do you do with them? You see. Without them, your vision is distorted. But with the right perscription I can see clearly.

Have you ever heard of a worldview? Even if you haven’t, everyone has one. Think of it as the glasses through which you view all of life. You see all of life’s problems, questions, joys, and right and wrong through this filter. The question then becomes, what makes up your glasses?

If you are like many people, your filter is simply made up of your experiences and thoughts. The problem with this is, we are just like those little kids we have all watched playing. Our filters are distorted and inherently selfish.

What we need then is a filter that helps us see clearly. A filter that is uniquely made for us. It’s a filter that helps us see clearly on the big things like why we are here, what is right and wrong, and what is the point of life.

These are the glasses that I want to find. These glasses can only be made by someone outside of the world in which we live. We need someone to show us what is right, just like the kids need parents to show them what is right.

So, where are you today? Where do you get your glasses? Are you seeing clearly?

Next week we will be discussing the consequences of this vision...what happens when we die?
